THE SHOW

'MESSENGERS: with Oyiza' is an engaging and interactive interview TV/Podcast series hosted by Nigerian journalist/producer Oyiza Adaba. Produced by Africa-Related, and taped remotely from New York and on location, this third season combines elements of a relaxed chat/interview with a wide array of selected guests expounding on various topics of African interest, to a global audience. The riveting conversations aim to bridge the divides, reverse misconceptions and open up positive discussions about Africa and Africans worldwide. Each 30-minute episode comprises inspiring stories further enriched by creative graphics, videos, and background reports on the subject. Season 3 is focused on Africa's People, Places and Issues

THE HOST

Oyiza Adaba is a Nigerian journalist and producer, with more than two decades of on and behind the camera experience in several multimedia productions. Through various media platforms, she continues to tell stories from African perspectives. Oyiza brings her unique vibrant African flair and understanding about both continents to the show. Her ‘everyday conversation’ interview style keeps guests at ease and viewers captive. She is the director of DELA (2023), her first feature documentary.

  • We connect the dots between continents with Yifat Bezalel, a trained classical and academic artist, who over the years has established her unique technique in her work process that superimposes semi transparent pencil layers of figurative and realistic images creating surreal realms.   • We welcome David Hoffman, a California native, veteran documentary filmmaker and winner of multiple awards for his documentaries spanning six decades. Well into his 80s, David is an active film-maker who continues to engage directly with his audience through his Youtube channel. 

  • We feature Mahen Bonetti - and her impressive career as  the Founder and Executive Director of one of the longest running film festivals in the U.S -  African Film Festival, Inc. She curates and facilitates all AFF programming in conjunction with AFF staff and participating partners. We discuss film, Africa, the Diaspora, Sierra Leone etc.  

  • Our guest, Mae-ling Lokko is an architectural scientist, designer and educator from Ghana and the Philippines who works with agro-waste and renewable bio-based materials. Through her work, Lokko explores themes of “generative justice” through the development of new models of distributed production and collaboration. In her artistic and design practice, her work deconstructs historical narratives and practices of extraction through the design of new material vocabularies and the prototyping of participatory models of production.

  • We spend this episode discussing "The People's President" with Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known by his stage name Bobi Wine. He is an Ugandan activist, politician, singer, lawyer and actor. He is a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, in Uganda's Central Region. He also leads the National Unity Platform political party

  • When grief threatens to overtake our lives, to whom can one turn? Dorothy Hirse is a grief counsellor that speaks from personal tragedies and triumphs. She has authored several books on the subject, and offers sound counsel on processing some of life’s biggest challenges.

  • Pelu Awofeso, winner of the CNN/ Multichoice African Journalists Awards (Tourism), discusses his fifth travel book, titled 9 Degrees North: Backpacking Stories across Nigeria. It is an e-Book to celebrate Northern Nigeria is a collection of 25 stories drawn from his travels in 19 states of the country. More talk on Nigeria's travel challenges and African global views.

  • This episode delves into The Architecture of the Bight of Biafra: Spatial Entanglements (Routledge, 2024) by Joseph Godlewski, and examines the historical intersection of race and the built environment in what is now southeastern Nigeria. In the wake of the terror of the slave trade, colonization, and civil war, it sheds light on the ways a spatial culture marked by self-determination and exchange productively crafted sites of Black identity, prefiguring today’s free trade zones and neo-Biafran secessionist movements.

His research and publication interests have included Yoruba and Edo (Benin) sculpture; masquerade; textile history; the inter-relationship of traditions and practices in the Niger-Benue confluence region of Nigeria with particular reference to Ebira and Akoko-Edo; and developments in sub-Saharan visual practice since the mid-19th century.
