Powering Africa’s Next Narrative

The Next Narrative Africa Fund is a $40 million mission driven content and media fund to invest in commercially viable audio-visual content made on the Continent by African and African-diaspora storytellers.

The Next Narrative Africa Fund aims to change the narrative about Africa and people of African descent by

telling African stories for global impact. It will also fuel the growth of the creative industries in Africa, empower

artists by promoting business and intellectual property ownership, and contribute to sustainable livelihoods across Africa and its diaspora.

Goals of the Inaugural Development Grant

Submissions Process

1. Narrative Change

• NNA Fund is looking for projects that allow for new and different stories about and images of Africa to be seen by the world

• We want to defy and challenge stereotypes about Africa and Africans while we entertain

• We are looking for projects and filmmakers who have something interesting to say about the impact areas we identified and, as a result, the world and the time we are living in

• We are especially interested in projects that have applied a gender lens, whether that be confronting gender tropes/stereotypes or showcasing healthy masculinity.

Ultimately, we want to positively influence norms in ways that benefit young people around the world, but especially women and girls.

In short, we want to support the kinds of projects that the world

should see about Africa and Africans

Goals of the Submissions Process

2. Pipeline Building for Equity Fund

• NNA Fund is looking for projects that will potentially enter the commercial equity fund’s pipeline.

• We want stories and projects that can travel; stories that an audience around the world can relate to it while maintaining the authenticity of the storyteller(s) and the time and place in which the story is told.

• We want to select projects from a cohort of filmmakers and production companies that can be great ambassadors for the brand—we can depend on them to deliver and be great partners to the Fund now and in the future.

• We manage reputational risk by working with partners who align with our values.

In short, we want projects that will make money and win awards

Ozioma Onuzulike's exceptional talent has been recognised on a global scale. He has been shortlisted as one of 29 Finalists representing 18 African countries for The Norval Sovereign African Art Prize (NSAAP) 2025, an annual award for contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora sponsored by Schroders. The shortlisted artworks, including Onuzulike's, will be presented to the public in a Finalist Exhibition at Norval Foundation, Cape Town, South Africa, from 4 February to 20 April 2025.

Onuzulike’s ceramic tapestry, titled Embroidered Babariga Armour for Fubara, is a masterpiece of intricate craftsmanship. It has been constructed from 3,189 handcrafted ceramic palm kernel shell beads woven together using copper wire to resemble a sumptuous West African elite gown called “Babariga” or “Agbada”. The clay shells were first bisque-fired, then selectively dipped into glazes before being inlaid with glass from crushed recycled bottles and re-fired to very high temperatures. His laborious studio processes made the shells resemble glass beads, historically used as tokens to buy enslaved Africans. However, beads are now considered prestige items and emblems of high social status in many regions of Africa. Created by Onuzulike at the height of the struggle for political power between the governor of the oil-rich Rivers State in Nigeria and his political godfather, this piece brings to mind both “agbada” dress (emblematic of the affluence of political figures) and the medieval plate-armour and speaks about political turmoil in Africa.

Ozioma Onuzulike is a professor of ceramic art and African art history in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also the Director of the Institute of African Studies at the same university. He is considered a prominent voice in Africa's contemporary ceramic art practice.

MEDIHA is the story of one girl’s fight to find her missing family members, revealing the strength and determination of a young survivor as she reclaims her voice and future. From executive producer Emma Thompson, this award-winning film from Hasan Oswald is an incredible story of resilience.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize | 2023 Doc NYC

Mediha, a 15-year-old Yazidi girl, roams the fields surrounding a refugee camp in Northern Iraq with a camera, making intimate, poignant video diaries. Captured by ISIS and sold into sex slavery at age 9, Mediha was traded among four different men, while her mother went missing, her younger brothers were also enslaved, and her entire community systematically murdered.

Director Hasan Oswald sensitively tracks the devastating aftermath of her escape and survival, empowering Mediha to share her experience through her own eyes and voice, as she seeks legal justice with the help of Yazidi rescuers and mounts a courageous search for her mother, and most of all, fighting for healing.

Mediha Alhamad was an integral part of the making of the documentary. She filmed herself and her family for three years, bringing the audience into the most authentic telling of her story, with a courage and determination beyond her years.

Emma Thompson, one of the film’s executive producers, said that she was “so honored to be a small part of this incredible film, which shines a light on forgotten voices and overlooked injustices. From the earliest versions I watched, I could see how gracefully and empathetically made the film was.”

Selected for many international film festivals, Mediha went on to win many Grand Jury as well as Audience Award prizes, including at the DOC NYC Festival.

We invite you to attend our special screening of this powerful film, when we will be honored to have both Hasan Oswald and Mediha Ibrahim Alhamad, the film’s director and subject, present after the film for an interaction with the audience. The conversation will be moderated by journalist Susanna Petrin.

+234Art Fair is dedicated to nurturing and uplifting the burgeoning art industry in Nigeria by providing a platform that supports emerging artists and encourages increased interest in art acquisition, thereby contributing to the growth and prosperity of the local art sector as well as its international recognition.

The 2024 theme for the +234 Art Fair is “Heritage”, aimed at young artists to explore ways in which they can build practices that tie to the past but also create new futures. The fair seeks to explore the development of young artists in order to give inspiration and insight on how the creation of an indigenous style contributes to global reach and success.

The Venue for the Fair is the new Ecobank Pan-African Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Victoria Island, Lagos. The programme of events include Masterclasses that will treat subjects such as African Art in the Global Art Market, The Business of Photography, Bridging Time: Connecting Heritage and Modernity in Nigerian Art, How to Navigate the International Art Scene as a Local Artist, Artistic Research, Grant Writing, Navigating Biennales and Museums in Contemporary Art

A tale of two communities - Adinkra Village, Ntonso is home to Ghana’s ancient tradition of weaving, dying, stamping, stitching and symbols. Over the Christmas holidays, an Indianapolis Sorority stopped by to fulfill their own developmental pledge.

Infrastructure funding in Ghana by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority

December 2023 was when  the  Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc embarked on a “journey of transformation” to the West African country of Ghana. Their aim was to mark their second anniversary by donating funds to the growth and development of some select parts of Ghana. The Sorority founded by seven African-American women from Butler University Indianapolis and led by the international President, Rasheeda S. Liberty undertook this as a philanthropic mission, by tagging the experience, “Transformative 2023 Birthright Journey to Ghana”.

This commissioning ceremony was  held on December 27, 2023 in the village center. The  Abusuapayin (Elders from the Royal family of Ntonso) - Nana Yaw Poku, family members, along with some dignitaries and resident Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Matthias Korankye hosted the sorority President and members.

The non-profit women's organization, committed to service, sisterhood, scholarships and sisterhood, has mentorships and development initiatives at its core. They had visited various areas in Ghana, and funded the toilet and water plumbing facility in Ntonso, near Kumasi, with a renewed gaze set on promoting a healthy and hygienic environment for its habitants. The community was delighted to host the Sorority, as they had done many times in the past with its constant stream of tourists.

School children in attendance of the commissioning. Photo by Adinkra Craft Village, Ntonso

In her speech Sorority President Rasheeda S. Liberty cited the group's interest in the development of the communities and fostering a lasting and meaningful relationship as a testament to their commitment to service.

The event marked a historical moment in Ntonso, Ghana, that brought out the entire community, including school children.

about Adinkra CRAFT Village Ntonso

Located near Kumasi, Ntonso is known as the homeland of the hand dying and stamping of Adinkra symbols on Ghana’s most popular cloth - the Kente. It is also regarded as a beautiful tourist site, that yearly hosts hundreds of thousands of tourists from across the world. The community spirit is felt by visitors, both old and young under the  leadership of Peter Boakye, popularly known as Alhaji.

In his inherited role as the current Head of Family, since taking the reins from his Uncle who passed away in 2016 Boakye says he doesn't take it for granted. He does his best in continuing in the tradition handed down by his forebears - to build an organized community structure with attention to duties and details. Ntonso remains a tourist haven that takes time to teach and offer classes about the origins and techniques of Ghana’s ancient symbols. In Ntonso tradition, the men continue to weave, while the women do the dye jobs.

Adinkra Craft Village, Ntonso is featured in the biographical documentary DELA, as one of the early influences in the art of El Anatsui - the globally reconignized Sculptor.

CHANGE is what happens when you put two community giants together in a room.

The Word of Life International is a 20-year old Bronx-based non-profit which aims to sustain lives and empower communities by providing short and long term services to foster stable and independent living. Founded in 2017 by long-time Bronxites twin brothers Derrick and Desmon Lewis, as the first and only Community Foundation dedicated to The Bronx, The Bronx Community Foundation is focused on building an equitable and inclusive community.

The two parties recently came together to host a lunch meeting for community members, small business owners, faith-based organizations, and individuals representing various fields in the borough. The agenda was a first hand account of the root causes of the challenges; and to create an envisioned image of the ideal Bronx that is achievable within the near-future.

Stakeholders expressed various concerns and agreed in general that more needs to be done in the areas of food insecurity, housing, environmental justice, safety and security, small business support, communication breakdown, immigration etc. Participants took part in exercises that involved creating vision boards from colorful paper cuts, photos, ideas etc.

The Word of Life International is run by Rev. (Dr.) John Udo-Okon along with his wife Rev. Felicia Udo-Okon and for the past 20 years, they both have devotedly worked with their community to fight hunger and poverty in New York City.  Its weekly feeding program supports an average of 8,000 household members monthly, and it envisions strong communities and individuals without the immediate threat of hunger, homelessness, and unemployment .

The Bronx Community Foundation is under the leadership of its inaugural President and CEO, Dr. Meisha Porter who is a former NYC Department of Education Chancellor. With her wealth of experience from managing the largest school system in the nation, it may be safe to assume that The Bronx is in good hands.

VIRTUES ON DISPLAY - Amarachi Okafor Announces ‘Beauty, Mercy, Kindness and Love’

‘Announcing Beauty, Mercy, Kindness and Love’, is a metaphor and a call for human connection, building up, garnering that strength, which is almost only found in unity.
— Amarachi Okafor

Our world today could certainly do with a few doses of these indelible qualities.

For Amarachi Okafor, an Abuja-based visual artist, curator, cultural producer, author and founder of ORIE STUDIO, the last two decades of experimentation have culminated in an interesting array of mediums, materials and techniques. With a BA in Painting, a Masters in Sculpture and also in Curatorial Practice, some of these techniques came to life at Red Door Gallery Lagos, where her 20th anniversary retrospective themed ‘Announcing Beauty, Mercy, Kindness and Love’ is currently holding.

A recipient of numerous awards, prizes and scholarships, including  the 2007 UNESCO Aschberg Artist Award and the Commonwealth Connections Artists Award in 2009, Amarachi has worked as a senior curator at the National Gallery of Art, Nigeria, and has also served as a juror in several regional and national competitions  including Life In My City Art Festival (LIMCAF).

Her worldview and wide range experience at Universal Studios, Aina Onabolu Studios and New Afrika Studios have propelled Okafor’s works to explore related topics such as environment, unity, nation building, hunger, education etc. With a variety of media, objects, words and events that includes painting, plastic bags, textiles, installations, performance art etc, she continues to promote these global themes that sometimes require audience participation.

In her words, “It has been a very rewarding journey locating methods for pursuing research, audience-participation and collaboration as part of my processes for making art; whilst studying and embedding tangible and visual notions of structure, design and architecture.”

This 20th anniversary retrospective exhibition is a ‘cultural production’ that gives visitors a glimpse at the evolution of Amarachi Okofor’s practice through the years. She has a renewed  focus on opening up the conversation about her creative process - from conceptual to creating, curating, research, documenting and archiving - masterful skill sets she continues to build on and share with beauty, mercy, kindness and love.

Original Quote

To announce beauty, mercy, kindness and love is the act of flying over limits. However tiny they may be. The act of erasing bricks and doors. The way to let the words that make us more beautiful flow.

Threats Of Terrorism

The Travel Advisory for Nigeria has been updated due to a heightened risk of terrorist attacks in Abuja, and travel to Abuja is NOT recommended for U.S. citizens at this time.

The United States Mission in Nigeria issued a security alert to its citizens against travel to Nigeria. Here is what you need to know:

U.S. citizens should consider departing Abuja using available commercial options. U.S. citizens who wish to depart but are unable to secure commercial options to do so can contact the U.S. Consulate in Lagos at LagosFM@state.gov for assistance.

The U.S. Embassy Abuja is only able to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Abuja.
