The book aims to inspire and uplift the faith community and serves as a meaningful gift to Men in the Church from the renowned artiste Bright Andrew Igho, also known as B-Elect.

'A Samson In The Wild' (2nd Edition). Narrated by Onimisi Adaba. Available in audiobook.

'A Samson In The Wild' (2nd Edition) was released posthumously on February 19, 2025 - what would have been the 57th birthday of the multifaceted artiste Bright Andrew Igho, who is better known by his artistic name, B-Elect.

The book delves deeply into years of struggles and ultimately explores the myriad downsides faced by a character named Adrian, who embarks on a tumultuous journey through a wilderness characterized by careless living, all while grappling with his faltering belief in Jesus as his Lord and savior. This tumultuous path ultimately leads him to a final and transformative submission to his true calling.

B’s message and mission must continue, and I hope this book motivates someone, especially young men, to rethink very important life choices.
— Patricia N. Igho

A Samson In The Wild’ stands out as a powerful narrative rich in its portrayals, insightful character breakdowns, and intriguing stories that captivate the reader's attention. It serves as the author's profound testimony, guiding readers through emotional highs and devastating lows, which ultimately pave the way to redemption. Amidst the themes of defeat, shame, and weakness associated with the experience of ‘backsliding’, hope and optimism remain steadfast and ever-present constants throughout the journey.

“We revived the manuscript two years after his passing, and I made it my personal assignment to bring the book to life,” his widow, Mrs. Patricia N. Igho, said with a sense of purpose. “Imagining it on the shelves of bookstores and homes alike, his powerful message passed on to generations unborn, was my unwavering drive.” They were married for seven years before his untimely demise.

The 218-page turner is set in Nigeria and uses a variety of interesting characters and features, such as poetry, Bible verses, and music/poetry lyrics, to tell an engaging and life-changing story. It was first published in Nigeria by Worital Global and also invited collaborations from the author's friends and family. These include Verdant Zeal’s CEO, Dr. Tunji Olugbodi, who contributed the foreword, as well as Lagos-based visual artist Uchenna ‘Minista Busta’ Ohagwu, who designed the eye-catching book cover; and author/friend Maurice E. Okereke, who provided insightful commentary on the book. The audiobook was narrated by Onimisi Adaba.

Emeka Ejiofor in Nigeria praised the book, saying, "I just read the book and found it interesting with many lessons. I'll recommend it to anyone struggling with moral issues, as it clearly shows the physical and spiritual consequences of those actions.”

B-The Artiste

The Author Bright Andrew Igho a.k.a B-Elect (Photo by Uchenna Ohagwu)

Early ‘Naija Hip Hop’ heads will forever remember ‘B’ as a foundational father of the Hip Hop genre in Nigeria, with the group “Thorobreds”and their award-winning debut track “Street Hop”. The six-pack comprise Elajoe, Tobechukwu ‘Ilbliss’ Ejiofor, Obiora ‘Obiwon’ Nwokolobiagu, Amaka 'Da Chief Rocka’ Nwosu, Bright ‘B-Elect’ Igho and Ikenna ‘MGB’ Ezenriyoha.

His previous materials include “Beats Rhymes and Theology” (2006) and the ground-breaking album "Hard Listeners” (2011).

In seeming preparedness for his eternal departure, Igho delivers a complete package with the thoughtful completion of this book in 2016. That same year, he made a return to the music scene with a fresh, new sound and concept EP titled “The Gospel Truf" (2016), which he described as "a surreal, sporadic, elect-trical flow on sparse piano chords and boombap traditional drums." The material was inspired by profound Biblical insights, his rededication to faith, and served as a prelude to this book, ‘A Samson In the Wild’.

The captivating cover art features characters from the book - two pieces of striking visual paintings taken from the author’s art collection that beautifully accompany the written work.

The 2nd edition of ‘A Samson In the Wild’ is available online from February 19, 2025, in ebook, audiobook and paperback versions. New York production house Africa-Related is tagged to produce a screen adaptation of the book in 2026.

His previous materials include “Beats Rhymes and Theology” (2006) and the ground-breaking album "Hard Listeners” (2011). He returned with a fresh new sound and concept EP “The Gospel Truf" (2016). Thanksgiving in the United States is an occasion to mark with reflection, gratitude and giving back to community and that often takes the form of collecting canned goods, donating warm coats and volunteering.  This press engagement is an opportunity to learn about Food Bank For New York City’s mission of empowering New Yorkers to achieve food security. Currently, there are more than 1.3 million food-insecure New Yorkers living in the city. MEDIHA is the story of one girl’s fight to find her missing family members, revealing the strength and determination of a young survivor as she reclaims her voice and future. From executive producer Emma Thompson, this award-winning film from Hasan Oswald is an incredible story of resilience.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize | 2023 Doc NYC

Mediha, a 15-year-old Yazidi girl, roams the fields surrounding a refugee camp in Northern Iraq with a camera, making intimate, poignant video diaries. Captured by ISIS and sold into sex slavery at age 9, Mediha was traded among four different men, while her mother went missing, her younger brothers were also enslaved, and her entire community systematically murdered.

Director Hasan Oswald sensitively tracks the devastating aftermath of her escape and survival, empowering Mediha to share her experience through her own eyes and voice, as she seeks legal justice with the help of Yazidi rescuers and mounts a courageous search for her mother, and most of all, fighting for healing.

Mediha Alhamad was an integral part of the making of the documentary. She filmed herself and her family for three years, bringing the audience into the most authentic telling of her story, with a courage and determination beyond her years.

Emma Thompson, one of the film’s executive producers, said that she was “so honored to be a small part of this incredible film, which shines a light on forgotten voices and overlooked injustices. From the earliest versions I watched, I could see how gracefully and empathetically made the film was.”

Selected for many international film festivals, Mediha went on to win many Grand Jury as well as Audience Award prizes, including at the DOC NYC Festival.

We invite you to attend our special screening of this powerful film, when we will be honored to have both Hasan Oswald and Mediha Ibrahim Alhamad, the film’s director and subject, present after the film for an interaction with the audience. The conversation will be moderated by journalist Susanna Petrin.

Three artistic figures with an intricate historical tie to the South Bronx, seemingly come together on a project targeted at celebrating a borough that is home to global talents and trends. Learn more about André Trenier, Andrew Freedman and Words by MOE.

it’s worth the read

“I have traveled all over the world painting and competing in International Art Competitions and made a lot of friends. I love to see new places, meet new people, and learn new things. Let’s combine my talent with your vision and CREATE SOMETHING!”
— André Trenier

BIG TIME! Inspiration Behind the Album Cover

The inspiration for the debut album cover for Spoken Word artiste Words By MOE, comes from the South Bronx, specifically a mural painted by graffiti artist and muralist, André Trenier.

The mural is located at The Andrew Freedman home, a historic site and designated New York City landmark located on the Grand Concourse in the South Bronx. It is not lost on us that the location is known for its musical history and graffiti art.

Muhammad Ali mural by André Trenier at Andrew Freedman Home in the South Bronx, NY. Photo by Africa-Related

The mural features significant historical and cultural elements, including Muhammad Ali, his butterflies and bees with a positive "wake up" call to transforming dreams into reality. It also has The Amistad painting with Senbge Pieh a.k.a "Jospeh Cinque", the slave sold in 1839, who headed the revolt on board the Amistad ship. Later, he and others would be fareed to return to his native Sierra Leone.

The Historical Significance of the Andrew Freedman Home

Imagine being a self-made millionaire with a morbid fear of losing your wealth in an instant. This is what drove Andrew Freedman to create a charitable trust to build a retirement home in 1924, for older individuals who had formerly been of good financial circumstances.

At its peak, the home could accommodate about 130 residents, housing 130 residents at a time in comfortable quarters that had Italian-tiled bathrooms. The tenants came mostly from victims of the Wall Street crash and World War II veterans.

The Andrew Freedman home has four-stories with formal English gardens and well-manicured lawns,  public rooms with fireplaces and rugs, and each private residence had white marble shower stalls.

In 1992, the Andrew Freedman home was designated as a New York City landmark. Today it serves as a hub for artists, organizations, residencies, exhibitions, daycare center and event space, with works that address themes like immigration and memory.

Historical Ties

André Trenier and Words by Moe are both South Bronx residents, whose works are relevant to their immediate communities.

André Trenier grew up in the Bronx where he” lived to create”, and began painting murals in 2003. Since 2013 André has painted several dozen murals in the Bronx and beyond,  including a 150- foot wall on the side of Spring Bank on 167 St and Gerard Avenue, commissioned by the Bronx Museum. He has depicted baseball legends like Jackie Robinson (Babe Ruth), Derek Jeter, Roberto Clemente, Joe DiMaggio and Thurman Munson. His renderings of the great Muhammad Ali, his portrait of rapper Sean Price, Citibike mural at Word of Life In’l have all garnered acclaim.

Words By Moe is a South Bronx artiste with West African roots. He writes on various subjects dealing with grace, truth and  love. His 2024 debut album Big Time! offers original writings with an easy flow delivery of poignant and inspirational messages that are relevant to today’s living. As his work takes root, he continues to attract listeners and readers from different  corners of the globe.

The artistic contributions of these three who have the South Bronx in common,  highlights the significance of conversations that bridges the gap between historical figures like Andrew Freedman and contemporary artists like André Trenier and Words by Moe. It celebrates their overall contributions to the history, music, culture and art scene.

The title Ominira —meaning "Independence" in the Yoruba language—evokes a profound message in Bruce Onobrakpeya’s artwork. This powerful piece reflects the belief that Nigeria possesses the human resources, moral fortitude, and abundant natural wealth to thrive as a modern and prosperous nation.

As we reflect on this artwork , we join Papa Bruce Onobrakpeya—a witness to Nigeria’s transformative journey since gaining independence in 1960—in prayer.

May the Divine bless Nigeria with enduring unity, wisdom, and peace. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, we ask for strength to uphold justice, fairness, and equity for all citizens.

On this special day of commemoration , let us remember that even in times of struggle and uncertainty, we are not without guidance. The courage of our ancestors, the rich heritage of our land, and the unyielding spirit of our people inspire us to move forward. Through the challenges we endure, we carry the hope and promise of a brighter future—one founded on resilience, unity, and collective progress.

Let this Independence Day remind us that , just as our nation's founders envisioned a prosperous Nigeria, we too must continue this journey to realize that dream for future generations. As we walk this path, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to the values of peace, love, and harmony that unite us as one nation under God.

Bruce Onobrakpeya, a UNESCO Living Human Treasure , celebrated his 92nd birthday this past August. For over five decades, he has resided in Mushin, Papa-Ajao, Lagos , continuing to be a beacon of Nigeria’s artistic and cultural legacy.

The evening of September 22 marked the first screening of the biographical documentary at the World Trade Center in Accra, Ghana. The film’s subject, Professor El Anatsui was ushered into the decorated venue by The Anyako Cultural Troupe, while piano genius Funsho Ogundipe of AYETORO performed alongside Trombonist Elikplim Amewode after the screening. There was a brief Q & A with film Director Oyiza Adaba, followed by a citation presentation, done by Dr. Odoi Oddoye. The film was well received by the audience made up of dignitaries that included diplomats, family, friends, artists and colleagues.

Acceptance Speech

Professor El Anatsui opened his acceptance speech with the challenges faced with continuous camera exposure in over 10 years of filming. He also advised the organisers on the use of the term "lifetime achievement," emphasizing it should be ongoing for living individuals.

He reflected on the global perspective of art and suggested that there are still aspects of art that have not been addressed. He also referenced the "art is life" slogan by KNUST, highlighting the complexity of life and its integration into art.

Cultural Influences and Artistic Journey

The Emeritus Professor recounted his early career beginning post-school, influenced by Western teachings with little emphasis on local culture. He noted how the discovery of Adinkra signs excited him as a young man growing up in the rural Volta region.

He also compared the Renaissance period in Europe with the abstract Adinkra signs, emphasizing their cultural significance and citing his influence by abstract art originating from the cultural center in Kumasi. He touched briefly on the challenges and contributions in Art, noting the ease of following but the difficulty of extraction.

For a moment the globally celebrated sculptor reflected on the balance between family and societal influences on his artistic journey, and dedicated the award to society, highlighting its significant role in his development.

He ended by thanking the Black Star International Film Festival organizers for their honor and acknowledged the societal contributions to his growth.

Citation

Black Star International's Tribute honors Professor Anatsui for his transformative works that have changed global perceptions of African art.The citation highlights Professor Anatsui's innovative use of local organic materials and education in his art. We emphasize Professor Natri's contributions to African art on the world stage, showcasing African artistry globally. The tribute acknowledges Professor Anatsui's extraordinary contributions to art and culture in Africa and beyond.

Q&A With WORDS BY MOE On New Album BiG TIME!

INTERVIEW with WORDS BY MOE BY Africa-Related

Words By MOE

est. 1999

Words are still powerful, and the right word at the right time is still very valuable
— Words By MOE

This week, we share the work of Words By MOE, a self-styled inspirational writer and Spoken Word artist whose writings are reminiscent of scribes of old. His mastery of language, expert use of words, not to mention captivating delivery; have resulted in his 23-track debut album, titled BiG TIME!

Words play a central theme on the album, touching on various subject matters from life to faith and love. The sound is crisp and fresh, backed by multiple genres of music - from Hip Hop, Reggae to traditional African flute and drums. BiG Time delivers an array of richly blended sounds that drive home the lyrically-endowed artist's thought-provoking messages.

The album was jointly produced in New York and Jos, Nigeria by Africa-Related and Deep Waters Studios. It includes some collaborative work like ‘Bringing Back The Mic', a tribute to the late Gospel Hip Hop icon B-Elect featuring Minista Busta.

The purpose is to encourage, build up and inspire others on this journey of Life.
— Words By MOE

Q: You have two back-to-back projects coming up in August and September 2024. Could you speak to them individually on the inspiration and purpose behind Big Time Album and book, Spiritually Intact vol 1?

A: Honestly, this whole thing with the music is my wife’s idea.. so projects wise she’s the visionary. As for inspiration, all I do is write, and the motivation behind my expression stems from my love for the Word of Truth. The purpose is to encourage, build up and inspire others on this journey of Life.

Q: Which of the tracks in Big Time stands out to you the most and why?

A: The title track, Big Time.. It’s a piece that makes plain what’s required on our part to recognize what is past, so that we can realize our future; in order to be able to truly put things in perspective as far as priorities go, in our lives.

Q: The album contains 23 tracks backed by various music genres. Could you elaborate on your musical influences?

A: While I do appreciate a variety of musical sounds, I grew up influenced mainly by the ‘boom bap’, there’s something about that baseline that just got me as a kid, listening to a lot of hip hop, plus all the color, the styles and creativity, it was amazing at the time, not to mention ‘fresh’.

Q: SI volume one shows the beginnings of your writing? How would you say it has since evolved?

A: Honestly, I'm not so sure how much evolution there’s been, other than a sense of refinement perhaps and maybe more directness when it comes to elaborating on a particular subject. Both of which I attribute to maturity, as a student of the WORD.

Q: What is the importance of words, as a means of expression in today's world?

A: Still very important, as far as communicating goes; even though the way we relate these days is slightly different from last century. Words are still powerful, and the right word at the right time is still very valuable.

Q: You have been writing since 1999, and only just sharing your materials with the world. What would you attribute to this gap?

A: Time and chance, situation and circumstance. Up till now, I suppose I was okay sharing with a few people, until my wife decided it was time to share with the rest of the world.

Q: Your faith plays a key role in your overall outlook. How have you managed to sustain that since 1995, and what would you say to anyone who has lost faith.

A: Honestly, it’s the grace of The Almighty, abiding in the WORD, and learning a whole lot about Love. I might not be in a position to console a person who’s turned away, but I do believe that He doesn’t turn us away from coming to Him. So no matter what, never give up.

Q: What are thoughts to share about your connection to these two countries - Nigeria and the United States?

A: Just grateful for the opportunity to experience what life is like in different cultural contexts. Very interesting indeed, despite challenges on both sides.

Q: What future plans for your writing?

A: Same as always, just keep writing.

Q: What influences have shaped your writings over the years.

A: The Scriptures primarily, but also C.S. Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, J. B. Phillips… to name a few.

Q: You did some collaborative work on this album, and your love for Hip Hop is evident with the track Bringing Back The Mic (BBTM), which is a tribute to the iconic artist B-Elect. Could you speak on this?

A: Actually BBTM was written as a tribute to B on Jan 25, 2011. So when I was called upon to contribute to His memorial earlier this year, the piece instantly came to mind; thus the input.

Q: Your work was featured in the biographical documentary DELA:The Making of El Anatsui. What did you take out of working on that project?

A: Knowledge is what I took out, and gained a lot of it. I was fortunate to have a behind the scenes perspective and learn a thing or two about film making, which is no light task, plus the amount of patience, foresight and dedication required. So grateful for the exposure and experience.

Q: Do you have any closing thoughts?

A: None other than expressing my gratitude to GOD for making all this possible.

Thank you for your time.

BARD COLLEGE ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOURTH COMMENCEMENT

Bard College held its 164th commencement on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Bard President Leon Botstein conferred 395 undergraduate degrees on the Class of 2024 and 229 graduate degrees. Bard also conferred 40 associate degrees from its microcolleges and Honorary Degrees to exceptional award recipients like Prof. El Anatsui, who was the received the 2024 Doctor of Fine Arts

The Ghanaian sculptor, who is known for his ground-breaking redefinition of sculptural installations that hang in the world’s most prestigeous museums, was in good company. Other recipients include Hollywood actress Rachael WeiszDavid C. Banks chancellor of New York City Public Schools, Carla Hayden, the 14th Librarian of Congress and Imad Abu Kishek president of Al-Quds University (AQU).

Earth Scientist Naomi Oreskes delivered the 2024 Commencement Address, in which she addressed the difficulties of today’s world, and challenged young minds to finding a middle ground in resolving conflicts.

“It's an instinct for many of us to want to resolve contradictions. To conclude that Heidegger must be either a great thinker or a fascist—because how could he be both? To say that Locke, as a racist, cannot be an inspiration to us today. To insist that Schrodinger’s cat must be either alive or dead.”

The world needs both speaking and listening. If no one spoke, there would be nothing to listen to. But if no one listens, then there isn’t much point in speaking.
— Naomi Oreskes

Located in upstate New York town of Annandale-on-Hudson, Bard College is a liberal art institution that was founded as St. Stephen’s College in 1860. It was also home to the late Nobel Laureate Prof. Chinua Achebe from 1990 to 2009. The Nigerian author of the globally acclaimed novel “Things Fall Apart”, was the Charles P. Stevenson Jr. Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard College.

The ceremony was accompanied by a Luncheon at the President’s residence, a tour of Achebe House, barbecue and fireworks..

A tale of two communities - Adinkra Village, Ntonso is home to Ghana’s ancient tradition of weaving, dying, stamping, stitching and symbols. Over the Christmas holidays, an Indianapolis Sorority stopped by to fulfill their own developmental pledge.

Infrastructure funding in Ghana by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority

December 2023 was when  the  Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc embarked on a “journey of transformation” to the West African country of Ghana. Their aim was to mark their second anniversary by donating funds to the growth and development of some select parts of Ghana. The Sorority founded by seven African-American women from Butler University Indianapolis and led by the international President, Rasheeda S. Liberty undertook this as a philanthropic mission, by tagging the experience, “Transformative 2023 Birthright Journey to Ghana”.

This commissioning ceremony was  held on December 27, 2023 in the village center. The  Abusuapayin (Elders from the Royal family of Ntonso) - Nana Yaw Poku, family members, along with some dignitaries and resident Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Matthias Korankye hosted the sorority President and members.

The non-profit women's organization, committed to service, sisterhood, scholarships and sisterhood, has mentorships and development initiatives at its core. They had visited various areas in Ghana, and funded the toilet and water plumbing facility in Ntonso, near Kumasi, with a renewed gaze set on promoting a healthy and hygienic environment for its habitants. The community was delighted to host the Sorority, as they had done many times in the past with its constant stream of tourists.

In her speech Sorority President Rasheeda S. Liberty cited the group's interest in the development of the communities and fostering a lasting and meaningful relationship as a testament to their commitment to service.

The event marked a historical moment in Ntonso, Ghana, that brought out the entire community, including school children.

about Adinkra CRAFT Village Ntonso

Located near Kumasi, Ntonso is known as the homeland of the hand dying and stamping of Adinkra symbols on Ghana’s most popular cloth - the Kente. It is also regarded as a beautiful tourist site, that yearly hosts hundreds of thousands of tourists from across the world. The community spirit is felt by visitors, both old and young under the  leadership of Peter Boakye, popularly known as Alhaji.

In his inherited role as the current Head of Family, since taking the reins from his Uncle who passed away in 2016 Boakye says he doesn't take it for granted. He does his best in continuing in the tradition handed down by his forebears - to build an organized community structure with attention to duties and details. Ntonso remains a tourist haven that takes time to teach and offer classes about the origins and techniques of Ghana’s ancient symbols. In Ntonso tradition, the men continue to weave, while the women do the dye jobs.

Adinkra Craft Village, Ntonso is featured in the biographical documentary DELA, as one of the early influences in the art of El Anatsui - the globally reconignized Sculptor.

On November 7, 2023, "DELA: The Making of El Anatsui" screened at the recently concluded Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF). Here are some highlights from the event.

Beautiful, beautiful.. Simply amazing

— Yinka Davies (Jazz Vocalist)

The 12th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), themed Indigenous 2.0 to Global was held in Lagos, Nigeria on November 5-11, 2023. Filmmakers from over 150 countries submitted their narrative features, short films, animations, and documentaries. The selected films were screened at FilmHouse Landmark in Victoria Island, with industry wigs in attendance.

First-time director Oyiza Adaba, founder of Africa-Related, member of NYWIFT, NYFPC and producer of TV series Messengers, traces the early life and career paths of El Anatsui - one of the most revered and iconic art figures from Africa with a global impact. Of the documentary, she said, “I wanted to tell a story in colours - a reflection of the spirit of both the subject and our continent.”

One of Executive Producers and Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Olajide Bello and the editor Mr. Ayodele Banjo of TWPC, were both on hand to engage the audience in the Q & A session that followed the screening.

Attendees include academics from University of Lagos and Yale University, veteran actress Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, musician and saxophonist, Egypt 80’s Tajudeen ‘Baba Ani’ Animashaun, Jazz vocalist Yinka Davies, Genti Media’s Ojiugo Uche and Salma Uche-Okeke, daughter of Uche Okeke the Father of Modernist Art in Nigeria, who was also Anatsui’s employer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in 1976.

I loved the way his story was told, taking away the political shenanigans and leaving the art. That is the beauty of it all
— Mrs Taiwo Ajai-Lycett (Actress)

During the two-hour documentary, viewers were transported to various places of influence as seen in El Anatsui’s works - from his birth place in Anyako Ghana, to the locations where his art is displayed around the world.

Mrs. Salma Ifeoma Uche-Okeke expressed her immense pleasure from watching the “nostalgic” documentary and further touched on the sub-theme in the film, encouraging the young ones to maintain patience and character in whatever art they find pleasure; and hoped that more artists in Nigeria will enjoy this kind of exposure through film.

... reflects the texture of both Africa and the global community
— Salma Ifeoma Uche-Okeke
